US Embassy in Tanzania warns its Citizens to vacate as they disclose the truth about Coronavirus in Tanzania.

The United States Embassy has warned American citizens in Tanzania on the high risk of Corona virus in the country. In an advisory shared via email, the Embassy warns that the risk of contracting the virus is very high in Daresalaam. It also notes that the Tanzanian government is not forthcoming with information on the true extent of the virus in the country.

The embassy also claims that the hospitals in the country are overwhelmed and seeking medical care could be very difficult. It has advised its staff and citizens to stay at home unless going out to buy food. The revelation comes days after the Australian High Commission in Kenya advised its citizens in East Africa to leave as soon as flights are available or risk being stuck for a long period of time. 

More cases of covid-19 are being recorded as coming from Tanzania in Kenya, Zambia and Uganda. 

On Monday, 9 Kenyan truck drivers tested positive for the virus after returning from Tanzania. In Nakonde, along the Zambia - Tanzania border, 76 new cases were recorded on the same day. The border was closed as a result. 

The Tanzanian government has denied that its hiding the true figures. However, social media is full of videos claiming to show night burials and corpses in plastic bags being buried or carried by men in full protective gear. This has raised fears that things could be bad. Opposition leader and Chadema chair, Freeman Mbowe, has claimed that the daily covid-19 death toll in Dar es Salaam alone was more than was 30 .


Al Jazeera in a special investigation this week claimed the death toll could be higher than 259 based on burial records. It is said that the Tanzanian government was attributing Covid-19 deaths to other causes.
