Eric Wakaria was doing some general cleaning in his humble abode, scouring every nook and cranny when he stumbled upon something that made his heart race. A bundle of old generation notes that are no longer in use. He did not immediately know what to do with the find but after some time he thought that maybe he needed to ask for advice from the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), the lender of last resort. ".@CBKKenya please advice on what to with these old notes I found as I was decluttering my room, " Eric Wakaria wrote.
Central Bank of Kenya responded by retweeting with a heartbreaking message to Mr Wakaria. "Sorry, we have no advice to give, " the CBK's retweet read. If he had hoped that the top financial institution would ask him to bring the notes so that they could be exchanged with the new notes, the message came as a gut to the punch.
The institution that regulates the banking sector had given Kenyans time to return the old generation notes. It had warned that those who would not return the notes within the stipulated period will have to leave with the reality of worthless notes without the option of exchange
.
Kenyans were quick to react to the Central Bank of Kenya's response to the Mr Wakaria. Some urged the CBK to exchange the notes with new ones. Others were brutal asking Mr Wakaria to burn them as the time for exchanging the old generation notes had already elapsed. Here is a sample of what the had to say:
"Kindly exchange and give him the new currency hata kama ni a half the worth his old notes...times are hard during this pandemic period, " Adams Manya wrote in a comment on Twitter.
"You have yourself to blame mister. The Central Bank of Kenya shouted itself hoarse asking you to return the old notes but you decided to ignore the calls. Pole sana! The time is over. You can blaze the notes or keep them as souvenirs that you will show to your children, " Joyce Tunai blasted Wakaria.
"I feel you. That ia a lot of money. It could have gone a long way in helping you settle bills especially at this time when money is hard to come by, " Peter Okumbi wrote in a comment.
