The new program is aimed at empowering extra one million customers to acquire 4G enabled devices in this financial year, Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa said.
Ndegwa said the program, in partnership with Google, is based on insights and learning from the Maisha Ni Digital campaign that saw over a million customers acquiring 4G enabled smartphone devices.
The announcement was made as the firm released financial results for the financial year that ended on March 31, 2020, which saw the company's profit for the said year grow by 19.5% with service revenue increasing to Sh251.2 billion.
“Smartphone device is crucial in supporting the current occurrences brought about by Covid-19. This proposition is aimed to support Kenyans during this hard period and beyond this pandemic by giving them access to more opportunities ranging from learning, working, or running businesses or offering any other services at the comfort of their homes,” He said.
“Android’s objective has always been to enhance the power of computing to everyone without leaving anybody out of the digital world. Access to the tremendous and various opportunities offered by the internet is important for any nations’ economic growth and social inclusivity. The majority of Kenyan citizens and almost all Africans get access to the internet via mobile broadband."
In Kenya alone approximately 60% of the mobile phone install base is on 2G feature phones and 40% smartphones with significant hindrances to people coming online, being the state of the device, and data affordability.
"We believe that this partnership with Safaricom will give more Kenyans access and the means to benefits and opportunities that exist online,” Mariama Abdullahi, Director, Android, and Platforms Partnerships for Africa said.
